Interview with Korotory

Give a short explanation of the band's origins. (story behind the name, when you got started etc) 

Korotory is a Death/Trash/Groove metal band from Long Island, NY, USA We formed in 1995 and survived every terrible trend in music, We never gave into anyone or and trend we made our own rules even when everyone said METAL was DEAD. We said fuck that and waved the flag of metal high and proud and here we are 17 years later. We have had many line ups over the years but our vocalist Ray Truhn, and me drummer Darren Markoff have been the core of the band since the beginning. Our original guitarist Gary Hoyt left the band in February and was replaced by guitarist Matt Scriva We added guitarist Chris Clemente and bassist Brett Weatherston to the fold a year ago

What are some of the band's influences?

There are so many but I guess the big ones are Pantera, Exodus, Testament, Death, At The Gates, Overkill, Meshuggah, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Vio-lence, Machine Head, and Kreator

What was your favorite show to play?

The three best shows we ever played were1. Exodus, Malevolent Creation, Holy Grail & Bonded by Blood in NYC 20102. Satyricon/Cthonic in NYC 20093. Death/Hammerfall in NJ 1998What band(s) do you want to share the stage with in the future?We would love to play with as many bands as possible the one band that would be beyond a dream but will never happen is Pantera.

Can you give any details on future release? (EPs, singles, full-lengths - anything you can give)

We have a new album due in August 2012 it will be called Chapter III : The Conquering

Do you plan to tour in the future?

We hope to do some touring for this record, we will have to wait and see.

If so, where do you want to play most?

Plagues of Prophecy Interview

Where when and how did Plagues of Prophecy form? (how the band started, how long have you been a band, etc...)

"The name Plagues of Prophecy came from an idea the vocalist had while in prison in 2006.
The vocalist called a meeting from prison in 2008 to get the band started upon his release in 2009, and have been together ever since."

What are some of your musical influences?

"Some of our influences consist of Cannibal Corpse, Cattle Decapitation, Winterhorde, Vehemence, Behemoth, Dark Funeral, and Cephalic Carnage. "

Is there a concept behind the band and/or your art?

"Our art work comes from song influences - basically depicting what the songs are about...horror, gore, and brutality. We hired an artist for the album art of our first CD and it came out awesome."

Are you planning to tour any time soon? Where do you want to go?

"We are working on shows around the northeastern region at the moment, as well as Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, and anywhere else we are welcome/wanted to play. "

Where do you see Plagues of Prohecy being in 3 years?

"Playing as many shows as possible and hopefully in the hearts of every true death metal fan."

Are there plans for a 2nd full length album in the works?

"We have seven new songs that are written in 7 strings and hope to be recording a 2nd album soon to release those new ones and more."

After Ail Interview

Interview with Ben Veau of After Ail

Give a short explanation of the band's origins. (story behind the name, when you got started etc) 

"After Ail has been a band for many years. With many different member changes and even name changes. I am not the original member. The only past members I do know are Corey McKinstrey who was the original vocalist. Fill in guitarist, some kid named Chris. then a fill in bassist, a kid named Carl Gustafason who has been in many bands playing many different spots. The band finally became named After Ail in May of 2010. Basically the meaning behind the name is simple.. AFTER AIL: After Ailment. Ailment means pain/sickness/blah blah blah. So overall it just means the aftermath of a disease or something along those lines. Like I said, I never came up with the name! I can say that I have known the members of the band for 4 years. So the band has been around at least that long!!! We recently have been endorsed by Monogram Apparel, a clothing company that supports tours and the owner of it was in a band called Anomia which recently had their last show. R.I.P. Also we just picked up some amazing management with Nasty Promotions, my good friend Matthew Hebert (Our manager) who owns the company is heartfelt dude who puts up with a lot from the local music scene and literally spends his life doing this, helping bands, raising an awesome kid and being one hell of a guy! He deserves all the credit he can and he has been helping us as a band more than ever. Thanks Matt! You're the man!"

What are some of the band's influences?

"Some of After Ail's influences are tricky and you might not believe this but..... here they are!Korn. I Killed The Prom Queen. Behold Oblivion. Adestria. As I Lay Dying. The Faceless. King Conquer. Periphery. Welcome The Tide. Destroy The Runner. Born of Osiris.

Each band named (...and there are more...) influence each one of our members in a different way. Whether it is lyrically and vocalist wise for me. Double bass patterns, breakdowns, to the tuning of the drums for our drummer. To the riffs and melodic parts we have in our songs for our guitarist, and for our bassist, well he is all over the place. In a good way!!!"

What was your favorite show to play?

"Hard question man! I do believe that everyone in the band's favorite show was one date in Hartford CT at The Webster Theater. The guys were telling me the crowd was insane, people wanted pictures with them, autographs, the owner said they could come back anytime they wanted! I guess it was one hell of a show! sadly I was not in the band at that time.I can say our next show with local acts and very good personal buds of ours on June 29th which is personally my favorite local band A Wanted Awakening's CD Release show with: A Wanted Awakening. The River Neva. Still Silent. Drama Queen For 600. We Ate The Survivors. Flood of Arcadia. Heal The Destroyer. this show is going to go in the books man, all amazing bands and anyone reading this should definitely check them out!!"

What band(s) do you want to share the stage with in the future?

"Very easy dude...Periphery, Behold Oblivion, Born of Osiris, I Killed Everyone, The Faceless, Rings of Saturn, Adestria, Breakdown of Sanity, Welcome The Tide, Suffokate, Betraying the Martyrs, Argent Strand etc..."

Can you give any details on future release? (EPs, singles, full-lengths - anything you can give)

"Well all I can personally say at the moment is that everyone keep your eyes and ears open for August. Some killer things are in the works. You will all love it! "

Do you plan to tour in the future?

"Touring is up in the air at the moment my man, 2 members in our band each have a kid, and one is getting married in a week. But hey, who ever said that can stop someone from living their dream. I personally want to tour the UK, but we will have to wait and see!

If so, where do you want to play most?

"There is no specific place we want to play the most, we want to play many different places playing as much as we can to get our music, name and message out there through my lyrics and through our heart for this.  All I can say to anyone is, it doesn't matter what genre you are, whether you play all breakdowns, open notes, or if you are nothing but guitar sweeps, vocal squeals and blast beats. It doesn't matter what you play, as long as that "genre' doesn't stop you from progressing as a band. Play what you want, write what you want, do what YOU want. Don't let anything get in the way of that. It is a therapy for music, and a hobby for few nowadays. release yourself through the music you play and write, and keep on shredding. Fuck."

Valor (Pa) Interview

Give an explanation of the band's origins. (story behind the name, when you got started etc)

"Our vocalist had a side project with a few guys from his previous band named Valor.
We all liked it and thought that it would fit us best, so we just used that for our name.
Matt Bilby from Empyreal actually came up with Valor. We got started and playing shows
early 2012 after we got a new vocalist and changed our name to Valor."

What are some of the band's influences?

"I would say I, the Breather, The Gun Show, Volumes, Structures, and Upon a Burning Body.
We like fast, bouncy, and heavy bands."

What has been your favorite show to play so far?

"When we played with The Last Ten Seconds of Life and Johnny Booth. They were both crazy live and really down to earth guys."

What band(s) do you want to share the stage with in the future?

"Volumes, I, the Breather, Structures, and Stray From the Path would be awesome to share the stage with."

Can you provide any details on future release? (EPs, singles, full-lengths - anything you can give)

"Currently we're in the process of finishing up our EP "Restless: Attachments." We've only got two or three more songs to record for a 5 or 6 song EP."

Do you plan to tour in the future?

"Actually this summer we're trying to get a tour going. If you're a band or if you're booking

What is the origin of Eyes of Torment? (origin of the name, how the band started, how long have you been a band)

"Well unfortunately the origin of our name is kind of a lame story, our drummer came up with it when we started and we just thought it sounded cool lol. As far as a time frame we started doing this about 2 ½ to 3 years ago with Myself, Ben and Spidy and it’s grown from there. We have had a few member changes over this time but the line up we have now seems to be working great and I don’t see any reason for a change in members anytime soon."

What are some of your musical influences?

"God lol, this list is endless. I can remember the first metal i ever listened to was Metallica and Iron Maiden in the car with my Dad when I was 5, that alone spun me into an endless pit of metal of all genres that hasn't stopped to this day. I guess if i had to name a few artist that have really influenced the style and structure of Eyes of Torment though a few stand out. The Black Dahlia Murder, The Faceless, Whitechapel, and Within the Ruins are probably the big ones. All of these bands in some way influence every member of our band. Like i said before, the list is endless, and our style has really developed into its own thing. But we can never forget where our roots come from. We always tell people if they like it they like it and who cares otherwise :)"

What band(s) do you want to share the stage with in the future?

"We have been lucky enough in our time with this band to share the stage with some of our favorite metal bands, local and national alike. We really just hope to continue doing this and take everything as far and as big as we possibly can."

Can you give any details on the new album? (release date, name, overall theme)

"Yes, the new album is going to be called “The Inevitable Collapse of Earthly Consummation” (basically meaning all good things end) and it’s about the fall and aftermath of mankind in the event of the apocalypse. Release date is still up in the air because we are trying to make this album perfect from start to finish for all of our fans. We are constantly release studio updates and hopefully will have everything done within the month!"

I conducted an interview with the founder of Steamroller Records, Will Borneman

Give a brief description of the origins of Steamroller Records. (story behind the name, when you got started, what made you decide to start an independent label etc)

"Steamroller Records was actually sort of the result of different things I was trying to do and basically me realizing that I was essentially trying to run a label. I'd been building up my home studio for 4 or 5 years and at different times during those years I was doing different things around the metal scene. Me and Mark McPheeters (who writes and does interviews now for SkullsnBones.com) tried to start a small metal booking outfit as far back at 2007/2008. I also got a CD printer together as well as continuing to record bands at the studio. I had always thought starting a label would be awesome - getting to work closely with underground bands, doing recordings, mastering and putting CD's out. So everything I was doing basically came together smoothly to form Steamroller Records. 

The name just came from trying to think of something huge and heavy like the metal we want to put out. Any other meanings it may contain you can imagine for yourself."

What was the first band you ever signed?

"The first band on the label officially was my own band Beeravore simply because of course we are using our studio to record and putting out our with CD with our equipment. The first band we officially signed a contract with, though, and released a CD for, is Plagues of Prophecy from Tennessee. Sort of black/death metal fusion with some real groovy parts too. Those guys are sick - definitely need to listen to them if you don't already. 

There were already a couple other bands associated with the label, like Severed Faith and Aborning both from Atlanta, but nobody else had signed an actual contract when Plagues of Prophecy did."

How many bands are currently signed to Steamroller Records?

"Currently we have Beeravore, Severed Faith, Control the Devastator, To Avoid Confusion, Plagues of Prophecy, Eyes of Torment, Cooter Punch, Desolate Anguish, Aborning and Dead Bastard, Perpetrator is in talks with the label and in our catalogue at the store we also distro for Exscruciate, Neuroblast, synapse Defect, Coathanger Abortion and more. So, about 11 bands putting out new material plus a few more we work with in other ways. "

Are there any specific bands you plan, or would like to sign to your label in the near future? 

"There are definitely tons more awesome bands out there, even just around Atlanta and the Southeast. A lot of bands I'm interested in turn out to already be on other small labels or doing their own thing, so it's my ultimate goal be offering bands the biggest percentages of money for their music, offering them the best services and the coolest most understanding label experience out there. I've been playing live music and releasing EP's and CD's for over a decade and I feel like have plenty of first hand experience knowing the thoughts and feelings and aspirations of underground musicians. I have a little help from Ryan (guitarist in Beeravore/bass in Coathanger Abortion) here and there and we both do this purely because it's what we WANT to be doing. I'd be doing the same stuff anyway whether it was called Steamroller or not. I don't make barely any money. I think artists can appreciate that and I hope that connection encourages more of the awesome underground acts that are out there to come talk to me about Steamroller."

What is your favorite band on the label?

"There's no way I'd pick a single favorite band on the label. All the bands on the label strike a chord with me musically in some way and that's why I wanted to work with them. All the music that's been recorded and/or released through Steamroller in the last year or so is awesome. Plagues of Prophecy's debut full length "Luscious Decrepit Bones" is really multifaceted and interesting. Really heavy and fast yet groovy at the same time. The upcoming debut album from To Avoid Confusion that I'm currently mixing is just pure badass brutality. Lots of brutal slam and actually some real soulful awesome sounding solos and leads throughout. Eyes of Torment is also getting their upcoming debut full length album together and all I can say is that a fervor is building around it. People loves those guys. The Control the Devastator EP is badass and they are getting ready to come in the studio and do a full length. And of course I love all the Beeravore stuff. Severed Faith is getting things going again also. Just lots of exciting stuff. 

And anything else you want to say about the label?

"Just that there is an absolutely immeasurable amount of brutal underground metal that is coming down the pipeline to be released on Steamroller, along with all the excellent music that we've already put out. These bands on this label are all growing and developing and turning into the next generation of well known top performing metal bands - and we are getting more of the best bands whenever and wherever we can. We are really just getting legitimately cranked up and I really believe Steamroller is reaching the artists who have the vision and talent to establish the next generation of brutal underground metal. So it's in every metal fan's best interest to keep up with us. I conducted an interview with Logan Beaver of Central Pa's up and coming post-hardcore act, Empyreal.

Give a short explanation of the bands origins. (story behind the name, when you got started etc)

"We started in late 2012 under the name Earth Abides. I'm not really sure how we came up with name, but we scrapped that idea and went back to the name Empyreal (the name of Matt and Jeff's former deathcore band) and we just kind of stuck with that."

What are some of the band's influences?

"I myself am greatly influenced by a melodic hardcore band from Oregon called It Prevails. I listen to a lot of melodic hardcore and alot of metalcore too. Same with the other guitarist, Jeff. Our vocalist, matt, he listens to a wide range of music such as Structures and For the Fallen Dreams. And Vinny, or drummer, he really likes woe is me, and a bunch of the other rise bands.He's also a pretty big periphery fan. I guess we all like periphery alot, haha."

What was your favorite show to play?

"My favorite show to play, hm, I'd say any of the phillips emporium shows, in Bloomsburg. I don't know what it is about that place, it's just fun to play there I guess.And playing at Eleanor Rigby's with Texas in July and the Air I breathe was pretty cool"

What band(s) do you want to share the stage with in the future?

"Honestly, in my opinion all of the Rise bands are great, so any of them would be coo to play with. But if you asked my top 3, I'd say either It Prevails or Counterparts or Vanna. If I didn't play metal it would be hands down, no questions asked, Transit. I love those guys."

 Can you give any details on future release? (EPs, singles, full-lengths - anything you can give)

"As for the EP, you can bet that you'll be able to listen to our EP before you go back to school. As for details, I know we've already released a song off that EP, but you can be sure that no 2 songs will sound the same. I feel like that's something that only a select few bands can do, and do it well. So I'm pretty excited to get this produced and out there"

Do you plan to tour in the future?

"We're actually touring this summer, I guess it's not an offical 'tour', but we're going all over the place, it's gonna be a lot of fun."

If so, where do you want to play most?

"As for somewhere I want to play, its easy. Warped tour. Every single person in the band would give you the exact same answer."
